WellPointe Pavilion adds digital mammography

Breast Cancer Awareness Month may have ended October 31, but the demand for digital mammography remains high this and every month for women who want the most comfortable and convenient mammogram experience.

Women 40 and older are advised to get a mammogram every year, according to the American Cancer Society. Early detection is still considered the best defense against cancer. So patients and physicians are celebrating the advantages of the new digital mammography offered at Parma Hospital’s premier outpatient center, WellPointe Pavilion in Broadview Heights.

High-resolution monitors allow the radiologist to magnify an area of the breast for closer review and compare results from previous mammograms with the new ones, side by side on the screen. Computed aided detection (CAD) provides a second pair of eyes for the radiologist, identifying on the image any areas of concern for the radiologist to confirm or recheck.

Digital mammography is especially beneficial for pre- or peri-menopausal women under 50, particularly those with very dense breast tissue. Patients also are less likely to be called back for additional images due to the heightened image clarity.

“Patients who go to WellPointe Pavilion are particularly lucky because we can take hard copy films from any other facility where they had previous mammograms and digitize them to soft copy,” said Linda Nicklas, administrative director of Radiology. “If previous films were digital, we can get a CD of previous exams and download them into our system for comparison.”

At WellPointe Pavilion, each patient receives a warm, comfortable robe to wear during testing. The facility offers a superior patient experience, with comfort, privacy and convenience paramount.
