Prostate Cancer Awareness
Watch this video with Dr. Carson Wong, a nationally renowned urologist, and Medical Director for the Center for Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery at Parma Hospital where he explains the importance of regular screenings, who should be screened and what treatment options are available to you.
“As men grow older their prostates will grow larger. As the prostate enlarges, they might develop symptoms with regards to urination such as:
1. Frequency of urination.
2. The inability to control the urge to urinate.
3. A weak urine stream.
The difficulty that arises is to differentiate whether or not one has just an enlargement of the prostate versus a prostate cancer.
That is why it is important to implement prostate cancer screening. The American Urological Association recommends that men over the age of 50 be screened annually with a Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) and Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test.
Men who are at a higher risk should begin at age 40. These include those having family members who have suffered from prostate cancer and African-American men.
What Treatment Options Are Available?
1. Surgical Removal:
a. Open Surgery
2. Radiation Therapy:
a. External Beam
b. Seed Therapy
d. Proton Therapy
3. Injections (lowers blood testosterone)
4. Cryo-Surgery (prostate freezing)
5. Watchful Waiting
Robotic prostate surgery is minimally invasive and is performed through small incisions resulting in significantly less trauma and blood loss. There is less postoperative pain, a shorter hospital stay and a quicker return to normal activity.
"The most important thing is for one to be given ALL of the treatment options that are available today. That is the only way that the patient and their family can make an informed decision as far as which treatment option is most appropriate for them."
