The BCOA Unit's Philosophy
The Behavioral Center for Older Adults (BCOA) offers a continuum of mental health services for adults age 55 and up. Services are provided through three components: inpatient hospitalization, a senior outpatient services program, and home health psychiatric nursing. Parma Community General Hospital contracts with Horizon Mental Health Management for management services.
Description of the Unit
The inpatient unit contains 14 beds. Three nurses work per shift, with a 1:4 staff to patient ratio. Outpatient services are provided at the Hospital's Health Education Center on State Road in Parma, and Home Health is also offered.
Inpatient Hospitalization
Experienced, dedicated psychiatric RNs and PCAs collaborate with physicians and an interdisciplinary team to care for patients requiring a hospital stay. Staff provides group and individual counseling, monitors and treats patients through medication changes, and supports and educates families during the process.
Senior Outpatient Services (S.O.S.)
This partial hospitalization program provides group and
individual therapy and medication monitoring to
individuals who continue to see their psychiatrist.
Staff consists of experienced psychiatric nurses, social
workers, and counselors.
Home Health Psychiatric Nursing
The psychiatric nurse provides care in the individual's home ‚ counseling patient and family, monitoring, and occasionally, administering medication. Home Health is growing and is in need of an additional RN for home care visits. Two years previous psychiatric experience is required, and a BSN or MSN is preferred.
