The Heart Center Units Philosophy
Patients come to The Heart Center directly from the operating room and remain in the Center from recovery to discharge. This innovative approach has resulted in outstanding patient satisfaction
and staff satisfaction/retention.
Description of the Unit
The Heart Center is a 14-bed unit designed to provide a comprehensive range of interdisciplinary care to patients undergoing invasive cardiac procedures. Each bed is directly visible from the central station, and is equipped with state-of-the-art computerized cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring technology, as well as telemetry for ECG.
Patient Population
The Heart Center serves the postoperative
cardiovascular surgical patient, the post interventional
cardiology patient, and the post cardiac catheterization
patient along with acute MI/coronary syndrome. Staffing
The Heart Center is staffed by dedicated RNs and PCAs, under the leadership of a director. RNIIs support the daily operations of the unit. RNs work 12-hour shifts every other weekend.
Newly hired nurses go through a special two-step orientation. Step one involves basic care of the cardiac patient; step two covers care of the acute open heart surgery patient. A dedicated preceptor committee takes new employees thoroughly through this process.
The Center seeks individuals with great people skills who are team-focused and dedicated to customer service. Staff will train those interested in critical care cardiology.
