The Inpatient Surgical Units Philosophy
The staff of Inpatient Surgery provides high-quality, compassionate care to adult surgical and medical patients who are acutely ill or injured, and who may require pre-operative and post-operative care.
Description of the Program
The 49-bed unit consists of private, semi-private and four-bed wards. The unit also has a satellite physical and occupational therapy facility, thereby allowing the nursing team to be actively involved in the rehabilitation process. A pharmacist is assigned to the unit to assist patients and nurses with medication questions.
Patient Population
The patient population is very diverse, ranging from 18 years of age to 100+, and exhibiting a variety of medical conditions including: orthopaedic injuries, gastrointestinal disorders, cancer-related illnesses, gynecological conditions or vascular problems.
Staffing
Highly trained, experienced Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses work together with new graduate nurses to provide compassionate care. Seasoned nurses serve as role models and mentors to new graduates as they develop their critical thinking and skills, while new nurses energize the staff with enthusiasm and fresh ideas.
The staff is supported by RN IIs on day and evening shifts. Patient Care Assistants provide services such as EKGs, blood glucose monitoring, inserting foley catheters, and simple dressing changes. Patient Service Hostesses provide completely nonclinical assistance, such as helping patients with menu selections, reading to patients or simply visiting with them. Unit secretaries are core members of the team, answering phone, transcribing orders and handling the administrative business of the unit.
The Inpatient Surgery team has been recognized for
its collaborative approach to nursing and superior
patient care outcomes.
