The Rehabilitation Units Philosophy
The Rehabilitation Unit provides holistic, interdisciplinary treatment for patients with physical or cognitive impairments. Staff involves family and the community in treatment to promote patient independence related to the deficit experienced.
Description of the Program
Nursing care, as well as all therapy, social work and psychology services, are provided within the self-contained, 33-bed unit. The unit consists of 16 semi-private rooms, and one private room that can be used for isolation. The entire unit, from the location of sinks and mirrors to signs and bulletin boards, has been designed to accommodate patients needing wheelchairs.
Patient Population
The patient population includes those with orthopedic conditions (hip/joint replacements, multiple fractures, amputations), neurologic disorders (stroke, brain/spinal cord tumor, head injury, spinal cord injury) and degenerative neurologic conditions (multiple sclerosis, Guillian Barre).
Patients are admitted from other units within Parma Hospital, as well as from other hospitals in Cleveland. Patients may also be admitted from home and skilled nursing facilities.
Staffing
The interdisciplinary team includes certified rehabilitation nurses, RNs, LPNs, and PCAs working with therapists, social workers and other health professionals to help patients regain their independence with respect to the impairment.
The staff takes an active role in reintroducing patients to the community. The unit supports a post-CVA bowling league and holds monthly meetings for the stroke/arthritis support group. Patients are also escorted to nearby establishments (shopping malls, grocery stores, and restaurants) to help encourage them to resume their daily activities.
