The Surgery Units Philosophy
Perioperative nursing at Parma Hospital involves holistic care of the patient undergoing surgical intervention. Perioperative nurses provide supportive care to the patient and family before, during and after surgery. They prepare individualized care plans for all phases of the surgical experience. In order to provide comprehensive care, the staff strives to meet the patients physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
Description of the Program
The Hospital has 14 operating room suites, including two dedicated to open heart surgery. There are also three endoscopy rooms, one cytoscopy room and an eye laser suite.
Patient Population
Service is provided for patients of all ages, from newborn to elderly. Cases are ranked as elective, urgent or emergency, and categorized as same day admissions, ambulatory or inpatient. Surgical specialties include: cardiac, general, vascular, plastic, genito-urology, ear, nose and throat, orthopaedic, thoracic, ophthalmic, gynecology,
bariatrics, gastroenterology, podiatry and oral surgery.
Staffing
Perioperative nurses provide direct care to surgical patients with primary emphasis on the intraoperative period and are responsible for perioperative assessment and postoperative evaluation. Supporting RNs in the delivery of care are: Physician Assistants, Surgical Assistants, Operating Room Technicians, Operating Room Assistants, and Anesthesia LPNs. The OR is staffed with in-house personnel Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., and on weekends from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There are on-call personnel around the clock.
